The need of going back to school is often the worst nightmare of the students’. Post-holiday syndrome can happen big to long-term holidays such as summer vacation, small to weekends. Presumably many students begged not to go back to school. I was, and am one of them as well.

Holidays are often the happiest time in most of the students’ heart, but after these, new semester hit, need to go to a new place, being forced to live far away from home and family, and even homesick, all of the scenarios could be post-holiday syndrome.

Conditions of Post-holiday Syndrome

Me as a student, I hated when school started after I had a relaxing, stress-free holiday. It is just like being taken to heaven by the entertainment angels but in a blink of time, being dragged down to hell by the devils’ named school and homework. The following list are the symptoms of post-holiday syndrome, you can use this to check if you have post-holiday syndrome!

1. Anxiety

2. Headache

3. Insomnia, unable to wake up early

4. Constipation

5. Melancholy

6. Emotional instability

7. Don’t want to go to school, skip class

Causes of Post-holiday Syndrome

So what might cause students to have post-holiday syndrome? There are 5 most common reasons for this:

1. Having too much fun during summer

ree

Playing video games, watching movies or tv series till midnight, or hanging out with your friends late at night. These could all be the cause of the syndrome, due to not getting used to the school schedule after having so much fun which causes you to forget about time. Cannot sleep at night and couldn’t get up early in the morning.

2. Going to new school

Going to new school, having to meet new classmates, teachers and make new friends could be a challenge for most of the students, especially for the people who are shy and are not good at expressing themselves. This could be a hardship students need to go through in their life time.

3. Dealing with relationships

ree

Some of the students, including me, are afraid of dealing with relationships. No matter who is it, it could be your roommates, classmates, friends, knowing new students or even teachers. People who are more scared of dealing with relationships are more likely because they had been bullied before or may being mistreated or trusted the wrong person. They afraid something bad might happen when they reached the new place.

Get rid of it

Many people have been asking, “how do I get rid of it?” or “how can you reduce the effect of the syndrome?” First thing first is to re-organize your daily schedule, having a positive mind could gives you more motivation of going to school !

1. Change your sleeping patterns

ree

Most of the people (including me) prefer to sleep whenever you like during holidays. I mean, come on, who would like to wake up at 7 or earlier in the morning, when you can literally sleep for a whole day! However, this bad habit need to be changed. Try to sleep a little bit early each and everyday, try not to play any video games or using devices before you go to bed. My advice is that you can also do some stretching exercises before sleep, this may help you to relax and easier to fall asleep.

2. Having balanced meals

ree

During the holidays, people often likes to treat themselves better. Things like eating junk food is, not gonna lie, the easiest and the best way to enjoy life. But this is very unhealthy for a long period of time, so you should consider having vegetables for every single meals if possible, you can also but fruits to provide vitamin c.

3. Write diary

ree

In my opinion, I think writing diary is a very good habit to have. Although in my case, I usually end up giving up after writing for a couple of days. Despite that, writing diary is a good way of letting your emotions out, and can figure it out what causes you to have syndrome, and from that, you can slowly adjust your daily routine to reduce your anxiety.

4. Exercising

ree

Even in a busy day, try to at least do one exercise each day. Exercises can help you to reduce stresses and help you to get rid of the negative thoughts. Doing exercises can also improve your health conditions.

5. Try to stay away from electronic devices

ree

Leave some time for yourself, stay away from all the social media such as Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat etc. Try to be close to the nature, or spend 10 to 20 minutes each day for medication, to make sure you have fully relax.

6. Plan for the future

ree

Being back to school after holiday often have a lot of things to do. Those things could be the reasons why you feel stress. If you start planing your timetable for the school to make sure everything is on track and not to squeeze all the stuff needed to do for a month in one day.
